Judicial Officers from the Civil Division of the High Court and the Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court underwent a two-day training to appraise and share experiences amongst stakeholders regarding the management of communication-related offenses.
The retreat was organized by the Judicial Training Institute in conjunction with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and was held at the Lake Victoria Serena, Kigo.
The retreat was flagged off by the UCC Acting Executive Director, Ms Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, who noted that the training had been necessitated due to the adjudication role that courts play in determining communication-related offences.
She said that Judicial Officers need to have the capacity to appreciate the complexities that come up in the investigation, prosecution and adjudication of communication-related offences.
The Judicial Officers were trained on practical experiences and given expert knowledge on key pertinent areas that comprised highlights of emerging trends in the information communications technology sector and the delivery of justice.
The Head of Civil Division, Hon. Justice Musa Ssekaana, urged the Judicial Officers to put the acquired knowledge into practice.
He urged UCC to always share any literature on new developments and innovations on technology/regulations. "Always bring such information to our attention so that we use it and avoid embarrassment of making rulings depending on the old guiding principles," he said.
Ms Rita Zaramba Sekadde, Manager Litigation and Prosecution at UCC moderated the training.
